End Gerrymandering

November 25, 2017

Current map-rigging is fundamentally unfair and undermines our democratic ideal of one person, one vote.

But that’s not all. When legislators aren’t representing the people — when they’re representing the extreme fringe and special interests — they pass policies that hurt us all. For example:

North Carolina: 76% of North Carolinians support raising the minimum wage... but in 2016, the Republican-dominated legislature banned local minimum wage increases. Virginia: 69% of Virginians support Medicaid expansion, but Republicans ignored them and left 400,000 people without health care. Ohio: Six in ten Ohioans support fairer taxes... but instead, Republicans in the legislature passed tax cuts that benefit the wealthy.

it’s not just these three issues in these three states — far from it. Name the most extreme state law you can think of — it’s likely that it was made possible by Republican gerrymandering. Laws banning abortion, allowing guns in daycares and on campuses, privatizing education, attacking collective bargaining… the list goes on.

If we want to end these terrible laws, we have to change the system. We have to make sure Democrats are at the table for the next round of redistricting, so they can stop the GOP from rigging the maps again.
