504′ Trusses Will Come Down Soon
The 504-foot sections have been stripped down and made as light as possible in anticipation of their being lowered onto barges and floated to an offsite location for disassembly. Although much of this steel is slated to be sold for reuse by the demolition contractor, these sections also contain pieces that are being salvaged for civic and public art projects through OMCA’s Bay Bridge Steel Program. Depending on weather and construction sequencing, the first 504’s will be lowered as early as February. Keep an eye on baybridgeinfo.org for an announcement.
Second Round Applications Due May 2nd
The second round of applications for steel from the old East Span will open mid-March and must be submitted in advance of the application deadline on May 2, 2016. Detailed information about eligibility and requirements for receiving a grant of steel are available on the Bay Bridge Steel Program page of the Oakland Museum of California’s web site.
